Chemistry is traditionally the most difficult of the science classes offered, due to the nature of the material but also because it is typically the first class that combines two subjects, math and science. You will find Honors Chemistry rigorous challenging, and a lot of fun! Most of the units studied will be new concepts to you. The list below details the units for study (although not necessarily in order):
Measurement; Atomic structure; Periodic law; Chemical formulae and equations; Gas laws; Solutions; Acids and bases; Equilibrium; Kinetics; Basic thermodynamics; Oxidation-reduction; Periodicity; Stoichiometry; Chemical bonds; Basic organic chemistry, and Nuclear Chemistry. In addition, we shall study 2 special topics with the help of videos, information technology, and the Internet. They are explosives and cosmic chemistry.
You will need …
- The textbook by Zumhdal.
- A three-ring notebook especially for Honors Chemistry for lab handouts, notes Aand written reports.
- Blue or black pens, pencils and a straight edge.
- Calculators – I DO NOT HAVE EXTRAS FOR TESTS.
- These items should be brought to every lesson.
Things you should know …
- Be on time for class! You will be marked tardy.
- No coats allowed in the chemistry room. They are a safety hazard.
- No food or drink is permitted inside the chemistry laboratory.
- If you miss class it is your responsibility to get a copy of any notes, and whatever homework assignments you missed. Please let me know in advance of any anticipated absences so I can tell you what you will miss.
- Late or missing work will be penalized. You must get your assignments in on time. Every past due day you lose 10 percent points on the assignment. After 3 days, forget it … you get a zero.
- Your grade for this class will be calculated as follows: 40% 1st quarter, 40% 2nd quarter, and 20% Semester exam. Every piece of work you submit to me counts towards your grade.
- Each quarter grade is made up of 40 %tests, 40% homework assignments, and 20% lab reports. Please refer to the lab report guidelines when writing lab reports.
