American Students Brush Up on Their Chinese
February 12, 2005
More and more young Americans are aware of
China's rising strength in the world economy and are studying Chinese.
We hear from several Chinese language students at Livingston High
School in Livingston, N.J.

What's Around the Corner

In the second semester, we have exciting programs planned for the Chinese language students.  I have been looking for a summer study abroad program in China for juniors and sophomores.  After a careful search, I have decided on the Landon-In-China program. Landon School is in Bethesda, Maryland and is an independent. College-preparatory day school for boys in grades 3-12 (http://www.landon.net/home/home.asp).  The director of the program is Dr. Dali Tan and I know her professionally.  This home-stay program will take students from other schools in the States and normally has about half boys and half girls.  We recommend our students attend the language immersion from June 28 to July 29.  We discourage our students taking the cultural tour in China since we are planning for our normal CA student trip to China for March 2006.

The registration due date is February 15th and based on first come first serve.  They will take 15-20 students.  The person who handles this travel domestically and internationally is an experienced travel agent.  My Fulbright Study Abroad program in 2002 used his service.  If you have any questions and concerns, please contact me at subisak@columbusacademy.org or call me at 509-2624.  I will collect the forms and mail them to Dr. Tan.  Although I will not be going on the trip, I am writing a proposal to present a paper in Tongzhou in July.  Hopefully, I will get to visit our students in Beijing.

In the third quarter, we will process the Chinese Honor Society memberships.  Membership is voluntary but it is very good for your college applications.  We are also going to continue to send our next year’s seniors to the Distant Learning program at the Ohio State University.  This year, three seniors were accepted at the OSU Academy Program and are taking independent distant learning Chinese courses.  Mr. Cullinan helped us to set up the computer camera in the school library.  Each student schedules class time with the OSU Chinese instructor.  They get on the computer at CA and meet for 15-minute periods.  The students earn college credits and again, it will look very nice for college applications.  The registration deadline for the Fall Quarter is May 11th and the placement test should be after exams in June. I will help our students prepare for the testing.

During the holidays, some of the former students came back from college and told me that they continue taking Chinese.  They said the CA program prepared them well.  It’s encouraging feedback.
