Chinese Curriculum

The CA language requirement is three credits for one language or two credits for two languages.  Chinese is offered in 7th grade through 12th grade and are available for a total of five high school credits.
  • 7th Grade Chinese and 8th Grade Chinese—Ni Hao 1 and 2 with CD-Rom, an Australian publication and Oxford Dictionary

  • Chinese 2, 3, 4 and 5—Integrated Chinese 1 and 2, published by Hawaii Univ. and used by many Colleges such as University of Michigan, Denison and other colleges

CA Chinese Language Program

  • Exchange Program, China Trips and Pen Pals:  We have an exchange program with Hefei City School in China and our students write to our pen pals in that city.   We offer a trip to China every other year.  We had 21 people for the trip in 2002 and 18 in 2004.  One of our students had the tremendous experience to address 2000 high school students in Chinese at the Hefei school morning assembly.  Our last trip was in spring break, 2006 and there were 26 students and parents participated in the trip.  Click here to view China trip movie.  This movie is 10.8 MB and will take a few minutes to load. 

  • Exchange teachers from Hefei periodically come to help us with the speaking and listening drills and cultural topics while our teachers visit them and demonstrated the teaching techniques.  Click here to view a movie made by our students for our exchange schools.  This movie is 9.5 MB and will take a few minutes to load. 
  • Summer Study Abroad Opportunity:  We sent our students to summer language home-stay program starting in 2005.

  • The OSU Distance-Learning Program:  The seniors can take OSU Independent Instruction Chinese courses in the Upper School Library through tele-conferencing equipment.  The students can earn up to 20 college credits.

  • Chinese AP and Chinese SATII:  Chinese students can take will AP test in May, 2007.  The students can also take Chinese SAT II.

  • College Placement:  Many Academy Chinese students test out of three college semester courses.
  • Chinese Computer Software:  We have Chinese word processing software built into all the computers at the school.

  • Web-Accessible Curriculum:  We use textbooks developed by Hawaii University and Carnegie Melon and can be accessed from the web which includes sound files, entire text, worksheets, drills, games, etc.

  • Chinese Honor Society:  CA students can apply for Chinese Honor Society membership from the national organization. 
  • Chinese Field Trips:  We have field trips during the school.  The trips  include visiting tea shops, grocery shopping, Tibetan Temple, Chinese restaurants, and Columbus Museum of Art.

  • Chinese Language Activities:  We do many projects, which include Two Weeks Vacation in China, New Year card, Family Album, Clothing Catalog, Suzhou Garden, Gingerbread Feng Shui House, Chinese Dynasties, Interview with a Famous Historical Chinese Figures, Marco Polo, Chinese Inventions, iMovie projects, etc.

  • Chinese Cultural Activities:  We have many cultural activities which include calligraphy, Chinese painting, paper folding, paper cuttings, flying kites, dancing, fashion show, cooking, just to name a few.  Click here to view a  cultural activity.  This movie is 4.8 MB and will take a few minutes to load.

  • Chinese New Year Celebrations:  The Chinese New Year is celebrated with the entire school.  The festival activities are designed and hosted by the Chinese language students.  Click here to view New Year movie.  This movie is 8.3 MB and will take a few minutes to load.

  • Guest Speakers and Visitors:  We bring in outside speakers to enrich our students.  The most recent group was Chinese puppeteers for the Lower School special assembly which our 7th grade students attended.  Our upper school students also go to the middle school classes to give them pep talks.

  • Service Projects:  The seniors do service projects teaching lower school classes about Chinese culture.

  • School Support:  The school has been extremely supportive to our program.



Current Chinese Enrollment


The program started out with two students in 1997.  Two classes were formed with 16 students in 1998.  In 1999, there were four Chinese classes.  Currently, we have seven classes, ranging from Chinese 1 for 7th and 8th graders to Chinese 5 with a total of 70 students.
